How to Decorate a Garden Room

Decorating any space can seem a somewhat daunting task unless you are one of those lucky people who have the inherent knack! Knowing what, where and how much to place in even the largest of rooms can seem like a game of Jenga, but what about when the space is smaller?

It can be easy to feel overwhelmed by all the possibilities available with garden room décor. Do you continue the style from your home or do something completely different? Here we look at 12 tips for decorating a garden room or smaller space.

1. Light All Around – the advantage you have here is that most garden rooms are naturally filled with light due to their construction. Let the light flood in; save those blackout blinds for movie time! For the darker, winter months make sure you have adequate additional lighting, so the space feels bright and large rather than dark or dingy.
2. Large Items To The Outside – you might have thought you couldn’t use big furniture in a smaller space; you can! Be strategic about the placement and keep your couches, bookcases or large units up against the wall to open up the floor space in the middle.
3. Double Duty Furniture – consider items that can have a dual purpose. A pull-out sofa bed allows for a living space during the day and a guest room overnight. A playroom could have a fold-down wall-mounted desk for your teenager to get homework done.
4. Mirror, Mirror On The Wall – mirrors aren’t just for checking you don’t have crumbs on your face before you leave! They add light by reflecting the natural (and artificial) light in a room, and they can create the illusion of additional space in a room.
5. Have A Declutter – smaller spaces need all the room they can get; a minimalistic approach will immediately give the illusion of more space. It also allows you to move around a smaller room more efficiently.
6. Hidden Storage – choose furniture that offers additional storage options, like ottomans that double as a place to keep throws and cushions. If you use your garden building as a guest room, consider a bed with underbed storage to keep linens and other items in.
7. Be Bold – A smaller space such as a garden room lends itself to bright colours and bold prints and textures. You will still need some neutrals to balance but go wild with a colourful print on the wall or a bright throw over a sofa. You could even paint or wallpaper a rich feature wall.
8. Don’t Neglect The Walls – use items such as vertical units and shelves to utilise all the available space in a garden room. This, in addition to the work done to enhance floor space, will create the illusion of a much larger room.
9. Go Green – we aren’t just referring to solar panels! Brighten up the space and bring the outside in by using plants and flowers in your garden room. If you don’t have a very green thumb, why not invest in a few good quality fake plants? They won’t purify the air, but they will look pretty.
10. The Great Divide – if you need to split your garden room up – you can consider using sheer curtains or open shelving, or room dividers. These will allow lots of light to pass to both areas and add flair to the space.
11. In The Corner – don’t forget to utilise the corners of your garden building. Be careful not to clutter, but if a side table or small desk can fit in the corner, put it there!
12. Big Is Better – when it comes to rugs, at least! If you place a small rug in a small space, the brain will think small. Using large rugs gives the illusion of size and grandeur – so go big!
